How I Stay Tan Without Tanning

If you’re like me, with skin deserving of the nickname “Snow White,” you’ve probably wanted a tan at some point in your life. Usually, I rock my inner vampire proudly, but usually by the time spring comes around, I get tired of blinding people with my paleness. In comes fake tanning! I used to tan in a tanning bed (sorry mom) 3-5 times a week when I was a sophomore in college and not only is it horrible for your skin, it’s expensive and relatively inconvenient.

I’ve been using self-tanning products since I was in middle school, and I even used them when I was tanning in a tanning bed (apparently I was desperate), so I’ve got a lot of experience and I’ve tried a lot of products. The one I’ve been using lately is pictured above, the Fake Bake Flawless Darker ($14.50 on Amazon with Prime shipping, $30 at Ulta). It has got to be the most natural looking self-tanning product I’ve ever used – remember when I used to tan all the time in a tanning bed? I get the exact same tan with this product. There’s no orange, absolutely no streaks (it even comes with 2 disposable gloves and a tanning mitt), and it smells faintly of powdered donuts. It’s supposed to be tropical scented, but I just don’t get that. Maybe I’m weird. Regardless, it doesn’t leave you with that narsty self-tanner smell that’s an unfortunate mixture of chemicals and body odor that screams, “I’m fake tanning!” And who doesn’t love powdered donuts?

I would say this product brings my natural skin, which is in between an NC15 and NC20 to about an NC30 to NC35 in a single use. I haven’t had any splotchiness as it wears off, but I also apply it daily to every other day to maintain the tan, and I exfoliate any rough spots with my Clarisonic. The single bottle will probably last me 3-5 months with constant use (compare that to your $30/month tanning salon membership), and buying it from Amazon saves you a bunch of money over buying it at Ulta.

I use two sprays for my forearms/hands, 2 sprays for my upper arms, 3 sprays for my chest, 3 sprays for my calves, feet, and 4 sprays for my thighs. When you use the mitt, keep one of the included black disposable gloves on underneath, unless you want to have brown palms. You don’t want brown palms. I find that this product dries instantly, which is awesome, because I can do it in the morning after my shower and immediately put on clothes without feeling sticky or having the color transfer onto my outfit.

I highly, highly recommend trying this product out! I bought it on a whim and I could not be happier with the results. It’s also paraben, preservative, and cruelty free. More reasons to love it!

My other tanning picks are…

  1. L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Mousse in Deep ($9.50 at Walmart) – This is a staple in my regular tanning routine and I typically combine it with other products and it tends to even out any self-tanner with red or green undertones and makes my tan look more natural.
  2. L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Lotion in Deep ($12 at Ulta) – First of all this is not a lotion, it’s a gel. And it has a lot of shimmer in it, so if that bugs you, skip this one. Second of all, don’t waste your money on the Medium shade, because it will not make you tan. Also, fair warning that this takes forever to dry, so I usually only apply it at night and I can’t put clothes on for 15-20 minutes without feeling totally sticky. But the color is really nice and it’s relatively inexpensive and has lasted me 6+ months and I’ve repurchased several times.
  3. Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Tinted Tanning Lotion ($15 at Victoria’s Secret) – This is a little pricier compared to the L’Oreal products, but I use this one on occasion as well. This is more of a golden tan, so if you’re looking for something deep and looks like it came from the sun, definitely give the Fake Bake product above a try. Otherwise this gives a nice glow, and has a golden shimmer/sheen. This product also takes forever to dry, and it’s the most yellow/orange of the tanning products I have, which is why  I use it the least. I already have yellow undertones, so a tanning product like this one is not ideal for my skin tone, but like I said it gives a great glow and I do still use it!

I have a crate full of other self-tanning products, so if you want any more reviews or tanning suggestions let me know! And leave your favorite self-tanner in the comments below 🙂

Have a happy, sunny Thursday everyone! Xx

Too Faced Chocolate Bar

Happy Tuesday everyone! It’s cloudy and mid-60s here in North Carolina and I’m anxiously waiting for Alex to come home!

Last night I picked up the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette at the PX ($42 at the PX, $49 at Ulta). I’d been wanting it for a while, but was iffy about purchasing it, since I already own the Naked 2 palette ($54 at Ulta with 12 cool-toned neutral shades) and about a million other neutral eyeshadows, but once I saw it in person, I couldn’t resist! There are 16 shades in the palette, including mattes (6) and shimmers (10). There’s a pretty wide variety of shades, including some purple, wine, champagne, and various shades of brown. Definitely more variety than my Naked 2. It’s also chocolate scented, just like the Chocolate Soleil bronzer ($30 at Ulta). The only way I can describe the scent is decadent – if it was edible, I would eat it. The shadows are super pigmented and soft (more so than my Naked 2), and I didn’t get any fallout.

I only have two complaints about this palette –

  1. The shadow names are not actually on the palette, they’re printed on a plastic insert that I will inevitably lose.
  2. There is no slot to hold a makeup brush. This isn’t a dealbreaker for me, but I usually keep my Sonia Kashuk 116 brush in my Naked 2 palette for ease of access, and it’s a slight inconvenience that I can’t do the same with this palette.

For my eye look today (I couldn’t get a good photo, sorry!) I’m wearing Marzipan on the lid, Champagne Truffle on the inner corner, White Chocolate on the brow bone, Salted Caramel as a transition shade, and Amaretto & Black Forest Truffle in the crease and outer corner.

For the rest of my face, I’m wearing ABH brow wiz in soft brown in my brows as usual, Urban Decay Big Fatty mascara, Clinique soft-pressed powder blusher in New Clover, Benefit Hoola bronzer, the highlighter in Lancome Blush Subtil duo in Pink Chic, and then two new products I also picked up at the PX and will review later – L’Oreal Infallible Pro Matte foundation in 104 and L’Oreal Collection Privee lipstick in Julianne’s Nude.

For shade comparison, here’s Urban Decay Naked 2 vs Too Faced Chocolate Bar:

Stuck in an Airport ✈

First of all, Lake Michigan looks much better when I’m in an airplane flying over it. Second of all, I am sitting in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for what feels like the 500th time, stomach full of Chipotle from the familiar Concourse D location, and I can’t believe that 4 hours from now I will most likely be in the passenger seat of Alex’s car. The last five months have been hard – honestly, though, I think we’ve had harder times apart. Nevertheless, five months apart was emotionally strenuous, equally on our relationships as ourselves. I have been anticipating this trip for so long, that even though I’m on the brink of satisfying my insatiable crave of togetherness, it is surreal. Until my feet are firmly planted on North Carolina soil, hand in Alex’s hand, I will not believe that this is really happening. But holy moly, am I excited.

What’s In My Travel Bag? (A lot)

ww2ww1

Happy Wednesday, beautiful creatures! As you know, I am finally taking a trip to see Alex in TWO FREAKIN’ DAYS! I’m actually checking a bag for once, so I have a little more room to pack things. For reference, I am not including any of the skincare products that I’m taking, because this blog would probably be pages and pages long so I figured I would spare you. This is the bare minimum of things that I’m bringing with me, but I might add a few more lippies in because I’m indecisive! 😊

Tools:

  • Elf Complexion brush (I use this for setting powder)
  • Elf Studio Stipple brush (I use this for blush)
  • Sigma F80
  • RealTechniques Miracle Complexion Sponge
  • EcoTools Domed Bronzer Brush
  • Random, super old brush from Clinique (I use this for contouring my nose and cheekbones)
  • Elf Studio Flawless Concealer brush (I use this to blend out eyeshadow)
  • Sonia Kashuk No 116 (Crease brush)
  • Elf Studio Small Angled Brush (I use this with ABH Dip Brow)
  • Small jewelry pliers (weird, but I use these to pluck my stray eyebrow hairs)

Makeup

  • Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette
  • Benefit Hoola Bronzer
  • Wet n Wild Color Icon Blush in Pearlescent Pink
  • Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder in 25 Buff Beige
  • L’Oreal Telescopic Shocking Extensions Mascara in Black
  • Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in 20 Sand
  • Elf Matte Lip Color in Rich Red (can’t travel without a red lippie. can’t.)
  • Covergirl Outlast 3-in-1 Foundation in 855 Soft Honey
  • Maybelline Dream Pure BB in Light/Medium
  • Benefit Porefessional
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Soft Brown
  • Nyx Wonder Pencil in Light
  • Elf Brightening Eyeliner in Coffee
  • Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kajal Eyeliner in Black
  • Rimmel 1000 Kisses Lip Liner in Natural
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow in Blonde
  • Wet N Wild Megalast Lip Color in Mauve Outta Here
  • Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara in Black
  • Baby Lips Dr. Rescue lip balm in Coral Crave

Soooo, it’s definitely kind of a lot for travel, but let’s be real. I want to be #flawless when I get to see my man after five months. (Even though he’s all, “You look gorgeous” when I’m rocking some 7am rooster tails, dragon breath, and smudged mascara that I was too lazy to remove the night before.) Let me know in the comments below what you keep in your travel bag! Also, safe to say I’m going to spend at least two hours shopping for makeup at the PX, so if you have any suggestions, share them! I’m sincerely considering the Too Faced Boudoir Eyes palette.

Liebster Award!

liebsteraward

Hey y’all! Today is a happy Monday! Wisconsin Whimsy was nominated for the Liebster Award, a blogging award that aims to recognize and encourage new and upcoming bloggers. I was nominated by my gorgeous friend Ashley, who runs an awesome fashion and lifestyle blog here, at http://ashleyerosalee.blogspot.com! (Check it out, she’s seriously stylish!)

She included this quote in her blog about the Liebster Award and I think it really helps identify the goal of the award:

“The purpose of this award is to recognize the hard work of new & upcoming bloggers and to introduce you to new gal pals to follow. Once someone is nominated, they are asked to answer a series of eleven questions that reveals information about them you may not find out in their daily posts. They are then asked to nominate 11 new bloggers.”

So, without further adieu, here is my Q&A!

1: How did you get into blogging?
I have always been a writer, whether it was for school, journaling, or on social media. I actually started a blog in high school that was mostly just random blurbs about my life, but I loved the idea of putting my voice out there and connecting with the blogging community. I’ve been a beauty diva since I was a little girl, so it only makes sense that beauty is the forefront of Wisconsin Whimsy. I have filmed YouTube beauty videos in the past, and decided to make Wisconsin Whimsy my project for 2015, and so far I love it! I’m made some great blog friends and learned a lot more about writing and beauty since I started.
2: If you could have anyone’s closet, who’s would you want?
Ascot from http://www.ascotfriday.typepad.com! I love her style…it’s casual cool and super chic. I now have an affinity for Adidas slides and boyfriend jeans thanks to her! She posts a lot on her instagram, so check it out!
3: Who’s your celebrity crush?
Guy crush? Chuck Bass. Because, duh.
bass
Girl crush? Demi Lovato! I know it sounds super basic, but I think she’s stunning with an amazing voice and I love how she’s really sparked an empowering dialogue for addiction and mental illness.
4: First thing you would do if you won the lottery?
Scream? Cry? Pay off student loans? Buy out my local Target for fun? I honestly have no idea! I’ve never even purchased a lottery ticket before…so maybe I would just be confused how I won!
5: One song on your playlist you’re embarrassed by but would never delete?
DON’T JUDGE ME. I have a tie.
“Down on Me” by 50 Cent and Jeremih and “Too Little Too Late” by JoJo. They’re the kind of songs that I jam out to in the shower or the car. I never get sick of them, and I know every single word. 😅🙈
6: You’re going to a dinner party tonight, what are you cooking?
Hmmmm….this is a great question! One of my favorite salads right now is spring mix with fresh strawberries, vidalia onion, and pecans with a light poppyseed dressing! I love the sweetness of the fruit with the nutty pecans and bitter greens. But, if I were to bring an appetizer it would probably be hot, creamy, Old Bay crab dip with French bread.
7: All time favorite TV Show?
The Killing. It is seriously one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and got a lot of critical acclaim! I shamelessly watched the first two seasons in two weeks. It’s probably tied with Dexter, though. Apparently I’m into morbid TV shows.
8: What’s one beauty product you can’t live without?
Wow, and I thought the other questions were hard! I wear a full face of makeup almost every day, so I’m not used to having to choose! Mascara would probably be my number one, since I have blonde lashes and I think in minimalistic makeup looks, mascara seems to pull it all together. Right now I’ve been loving Urban Decay Big Fatty! If I could cheat and choose three things, it would be BB cream, Brow Wiz, and mascara.
9: You’re at Starbucks, what do you order?
One grande iced caramel macchiato with my name spelled incorrectly, please. 🙆
10: What’s your cure for a bad day?
A pep talk from Alex, a long, hot shower, and carbs. Lots of carbs. Usually tea and Netflix make their way into the equation as well.
11: What’s a fashion trend from your childhood that you would bring back?
Jellies! I know they became sort of cool again a couple of years ago, but I think jelly sandals are so cute haha! Maybe update them a little bit, but I have so many memories of wearing them as a child and I think they would be great for spring and summer styles.
Hopefully you’ve gotten to know a little bit more about me outside of makeup! I love the idea and message behind the Liebster Award and I’m super excited to nominate some amazing bloggers that I follow:
1. Tiffany (My homegirl) at https://positivitygalore.wordpress.com/
I highly encourage you to check out those awesome blogs run by even more awesome women! Thanks again to Ashley for the nomination! ❤💙💜💚

127 Days Down, 6 Days to Go!

TZl6X8R

I usually get super mega anxious the week before I go to visit Alex for several reasons:

1. Because OMG I get to see Alex!

2. Physics is wrong. Airplanes  fall out of the sky.

3. I think since I’ve built up so much anticipation for the trip, that I want everything to be perfect so I get a little cray cray trying to plan everything. (We’ve made some really awesome plans!)

I’ve got six days until I’m boarding an airplane to sunny(er) North Carolina and jumping into the arms of my super duper awesome cute amazeballs boyfriend! (He loves my affectionate eloquence) Elated doesn’t even begin to describe how I’m feeling right now. I can picture it now…grabbing my carry on at the gate, since the plane will be too small for everyone to keep their carry ons in the overhead bins, wandering like a lost puppy through the airport until I see his familiar smile, probably wearing Vans and khakis, and climbing into his car with the familiar scent of of a black Little Trees air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror. It’ll take me a few minutes to adjust to riding in his lowered car and I’ll feel a confusing mix of sheer happiness and awkwardness to finally be in his presence once again. He’ll grab my hand and rest it on the shift knob of his car, and cool, nighttime air will flush my face through the open passenger window. He’ll ask me about my flight and kiss me on the cheek. I’ll tell him to keep his eyes on the road and probably complain about being hungry. We’ll probably eat at Cook Out, and I’ll get a corn dog and Cheerwine, and he’ll get a barbecue chicken sandwich. He’ll turn down the music as we go through the gate into base housing, and complain about the roads. We’ll park in front of our friends’ house, grab my things, bring them upstairs, and collapse. And I will feel right at home sleeping next to him, even though I’ll be exactly 1,082 miles away from my own little bed.

I’ve cried a lot of tears over the distance, the conflicting schedules, the uncertainty, the missed anniversaries and holidays, but the time we spend together always washes away those frustrations. I’m ready for those frustrations to be washed away once again, even if it’s only for 9 days. See you soon, A. ✈❤

Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils: Influenster Review

image1  image3

I received this mascara complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

I was one of the lucky people to receive the Yves Saint Laurent Voxbox from Influenster (!!!!!) I have never owned any YSL beauty products before (although I promise, I’ve admired them from afar), mostly because of how expensive they are. I have a hard time paying $18 for MAC lipsticks, so spending $32 on mascara is pretty much unheard of for me. I’ve currently been using Urban Decay Big Fatty ($20 at Ulta) mascara, and as shown in my last blog, L’Oreal Telescopic Shocking Extensions ($11 at Ulta). I’m pretty satisfied with both of those mascaras because they both give me a bold look – the UD mascara is super volumizing, and the L’Oreal is super lengthening, so depending on the look I’m going for, I can pick out of those two. ANYWAY, before I bore you to death, I was super duper excited and thankful to try this mascara out!

So, first of all, this is the Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils mascara in black. ($32 at Sephora) As far as the packaging goes…this is GORGEOUS. The entire tube is different variations of gold. You only get 0.2 fl oz of product, which in my opinion is not a lot. For reference, you get 0.29 fl oz in the L’Oreal Telescopic mascara and a whopping 0.51 fl oz in the Urban Decay mascara. One weird thing that I noticed immediately when I opened it, is that the mascara is perfumed. Yes, you read that correctly. Perfumed. If that’s not some bougie shiz right there, I don’t know what is. That might be an issue for users with sensitive eyes? It has a pretty standard straight bristle brush.

Claims from the YSL website:

Achieve absolute dramatic lashes in a single stroke for eyes that instantly pop. Its secret is the Triple-Intensity Formula: intense volume, intense color and now intense care. The nylon fiber brush coats each lash in deep color and maximum volume from root to tip, while B5 Pro-Vitamin strengthens and protects lashes.

I used this mascara in the photo above, and I have to say….I’m relatively unimpressed. It reminds me almost exactly of the L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black mascara, which you can get for less than $6 at Target, with 0.23 fl oz. It took two coats for me to feel like it actually volumized my lashes, and the brush doesn’t grab any little lashes on the inner corner. This is definitely a natural looking mascara, which is fine for some people, but it’s just not the look that I usually go for with mascara. As far as the claims about conditioning the lashes, I’ve only used it twice so I’m not sure I can accurately comment on that, but I haven’t noticed any difference in my lashes so far. One positive about this mascara is that it’s super black. Although that’s pretty much the only standout thing about it, other than it doesn’t clump, smear, or flake. 😁

Overall, I think I’d take a hard pass on this mascara and spend the money on a YSL lippie instead. I just don’t think it’s worth $32 for the little amount of product that you get, plus I can get a better mascara for $6 at Target. I’m sorry but this product does not deserve any hype lol! I was so excited to get it and soooo disappointed. Save your money on this one, gals! If you have tried this before, or also got this Vox, let me know what you thought about it in the comments!
